Starbucks Just Debuted A New Tie-Dye Frappuccino—Here's What The Nutrition Looks Like

If you’re like the average American coffee drinker, you’re probably somewhat obsessed with—or at least a little curious about—any and all new drinks Starbucks puts out. And they’ve been launching some pretty interesting ones over the last few years (hi, Unicorn Frap and Ariana Grande-inspired Cloud Macchiato). But for Summer 2019, Starbucks just announced their latest release: the Tie-Dye Frappuccino.

And it’s just as colorful as you might expect from the name. It’s a red, blue, and yellow frap swirled together, then topped with whipped cream and dusted with colorful powder. According to People, the drink gets its dynamic coloring from turmeric, red beets, and spirulina. (So nothing artificial!)

Cool, but what does it taste like?

People also reported that the drink has a “tropical fruit flavor that will take you to your happiest place.” Side note: because it is a crème-based Frappuccino, it doesn’t contain caffeine, a Starbucks rep told Women’s Health.

If all that sounds like something you’d be into, act fast because the Tie-Dye Frappuccino is only going to be available for a few days.

Wait, what’s the nutrition in Starbucks’ Tie-Dye Frappuccino?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but… this frap is basically a sugar bomb. According to a rep from Starbucks, “A tall Tie-Dye Frappuccino made with whole milk and topped with whipped cream, which is the standard recipe, contains 280 calories and 39 grams of sugar.” That’s literally as much sugar as a can of Coke. Yikesssss.

Compared to other Starbucks drinks, this one’s definitely near the top of the sugar spectrum. The same size White Chocolate Mocha has 45 grams of sugar, while a Hazelnut Mocha has 38 grams. (Btw, you can get all the nutrition info for Starbucks drinks here.) If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, nutritionists recommend these 12 healthiest Starbucks drinks.

FYI: It’s not the only frappuccino that’s delicious, but not-so-nutritious.

Can you make the Tie-Dye Frappuccino healthier?

Of course, you can adjust your milk and basically any ingredient in it to fit your liking. So, if you’re looking to make this frap healthier, there are definitely ways. According to the same rep, you can ask for ‘less whip’ or ‘no whip,’ try a different combination of syrups, coffee/espresso options and toppings, or select from a variety of milks (including soy, coconut, and almond milk).

That said, swapping in non-dairy milk won’t automatically make the Tie-Dye Frappuccino a vegan option at S’bucks. Though a Starbucks rep told Women’s Health they “recommend trying it with coconut milk and without whipped cream” to make it non-dairy, the company “cannot confirm the beverage is vegan.” This is due to the nature in which Starbucks operates its stores, the possibility of cross-contamination, and that the ingredients are not certified vegan.

Still, if you’re looking for a fun summer treat, the Tie-Dye Frappuccino is definitely a feast for the eyes—and your sweet tooth.
