Looking at other people’s physique pictures online can be a source of motivation and inspiration—but for many, it can also just as easily lead to them feeling bad about the way they look. Perspective is everything.
“Out of the 100 photos you take of yourself, you always search for the one where you look your absolute best, the one that will attract the most likes,” says YouTuber Joe Fazer. “I can’t blame anyone for doing that, I do it myself. It’s great for my confidence.”
And while he doesn’t necessarily see an issue with this practice, Joe does believe it’s important to acknowledge that the photos we see on social media represent that single photo out of 100, and that the circumstances surrounding a photoshoot can have a huge impact on the end product.
In his most recent video, Joe sets out to explore just how many of those factors he can manipulate in the space of 5 minutes, in order to take the best possible photo of his body. The five components he has identified as key to a good physique photo are:
Joe takes two photos, a “before” and “after,” but captures them in reverse, first doing everything he can to maximize the appearance of his body, eating sugar and salt, trying to get as much blood into his “showoff” muscles as possible, positioning himself under optimal lighting, and adopting a traditional bodybuilding pose.
For the second photo, he demonstrates how different he looks after consuming soda and milk, which cause bloating, and changes the lighting setup of the photo. Then he uses the filtering tool on the “after” photo to create as much emphasis on his muscle definition as he can.
“”They look like two completely different people,” he says. “Obviously, I don’t ever look as good as the one on the right, and I don’t look as bad as the one on the left, I’m somewhere in the middle. But it just shows, don’t look at these photos of people on social media and think that’s what they’re always looking like… I’m glad I did it, it’s a cool experiment.”
