National Beauty Science Institute Hosts Second Master Class in Paris

PARIS — Judy Price continued her quest to introduce students and young professionals to the multifaceted beauty industry with the colloquium she hosted here on Sept. 11.
“The Science & Sustainability of Beauty Masterclass” ran all day at the Institut Pasteur Paris and included speakers from the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Coty Inc., Symrise and Johnson & Johnson.
About 600 people filled the vast auditorium in the scientific research campus on Paris’ Left Bank.
For Price, Avenue magazine’s founder who established in 2016 and presides over the nonprofit National Beauty Sciences Institute, it’s exciting “to be able to be a mentor to people who are smart, who want to learn."
“Beauty is changing every single day,” she told WWD. “People — Millennials, especially — want to know what are the changes happening in the beauty industry.”
To wit, Price with NBSI in about two months is launching a blog, called BeautyLabTalk, that students and young professionals from around the world will be able to tap into. “There, all the scientists can post on a regular basis about new products coming out, new things that are happening in the laboratory,” she explained.
A few hundred students in June took part in a hackathon to help create BeautyLabTalk’s logo.
During the various company talks during this master class session, subjects such as epigenetics, mechanobiology, metabolomics, ethnobotany and biomimicry were discussed.
The Estée Lauder Cos. executives talked about new frontiers of innovation in the cosmetics industry, while LVMH focused on the cutting edge of natural cosmetics. Coty titled its speech “Pioneering and shaping the future of beauty.”
Symrise revealed its innovation plan designed for virtuous growth in the long term. And Johnson & Johnson presented its Consumer Health division’s holistic sustainability approach.
During breaks between talks at stands set up outside the lecture hall attendees could learn more about each company, which had a human resources manager on hand. Symrise at its booth invited people to submit a sustainable-themed initiative that will result in one or two being granted an internship.
Price is the ultimate planner, with NBSI’s fourth master class very much in the works. On Sept. 9, 2020, it will be staged in The Royal Institution of Great Britain, based in London. The geographic shift from Paris, where last year’s edition took place, as well, is intended to help reach students and young professionals from different countries and learning institutions, she said.
