Crown Labs Builds Beauty Portfolio With Bellus Deal

Crown Laboratories, the company that recently bought Vita Liberata, has acquired Bellus Medical, a business that owns multiple types of skin treatments.
Bellus specializes in noninvasive skin products, including Skin Pen, an FDA-approved microneedling device for acne scars, Skinfuse, a post microneedling service, Allumera, a light-activated cream, and ProGenTM and RegenLab, which are both platelet-rich plasma treatments. The business will continue to be based in Dallas.
For Crown, buying Bellus establishes an aesthetics division for the company, which will be renamed Bellus Aesthetics. Bellus' chief executive officer Joe Proctor will become president of that division and join Crown's board. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Crown is backed by private equity firm Hildred Partners LLC, and earlier this month, the business received growth capital financing from Montreux Equity Partners. In January, Crown acquired Vita Liberata, a prestige self-tanning brand that sells products through QVC, Sephora, Space NK and Ulta Beauty.
Crown is one of many newcomers to the beauty M&A scene, which has remained busy for several years. Other recent deals have come from Procter & Gamble, which bought First Aid Beauty in July, and Eurazeo, which invested $60 million in Pat McGrath Labs.
