Chanel Is Launching a Makeup Line for Men, and People Have a LOT of Opinions on It
Stylo Yeux and No. 5 lovers, rejoice: Chanel is launching an entirely new line of makeup that is specifically "for men." Called Boy de Chanel, the line includes a matte moisturizing lip balm, a tinted fluid, and an eyebrow pencil, which comes in four different shades.
According to The Cut, the name is a "riff on gender" inspired by designer Gabrielle Chanel’s lover and muse, Boy Capel. “Just as Gabrielle Chanel borrowed elements from the men’s wardrobe to dress women, Chanel draws inspiration from the women’s world to write the vocabulary of a new personal aesthetic for men,” the company said in a press release, per The Cut. “Lines, colors, attitudes, gestures … There is no absolutely feminine or masculine prerequisite: Style alone defines the person we wish to be.”
It's worth noting that all makeup can be worn by all genders, and that the idea that something is "for men" is more about packaging than anything else. Beauty vloggers like Manny MUA, Patrick Starr, and James Charles, among many, many others dominating our YouTube and Instagram feeds, have demonstrated that men can wear Fenty Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics products just as fabulously as their female peers. The idea that traditional makeup is solely for women is a societal construct, which is slowly (but surely) being broken down. CoverGirl named its first "boy of beauty" in 2016, and brands like M.A.C. and Milk Makeup are following suit by casting men in their advertising campaigns.
Regardless of the gender you identify as, Chanel's new line is worth checking out, if only just for the sleek packaging that will look super chic in a #shelfie. The products will be available in South Korea starting September 1, then will hit Chanel's website in November and be available in stores on January 1.
