5 Healthy Food Swaps To Make This Christmas

Christmas is all about being surrounded by friends, family, loved ones and of course…. FOOD! Although eating your weight in Christmas ham is in the name of celebration, there are some yummy food swaps that you can easily slip into your Christmas table (if you’re anything like my family…. Christmas food tables (plural) haha!)

Chilli Kale Chips instead of Potato Chips

For all my savoury craving people out there…these are the best! Typically, if I’m snacking on potato chips on the table, I’ m usually craving salt! Instead, I love making chilli kale chips! All you need is one bunch of kale leafs (bite-sized pieces, stalk removed), 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of chilli flakes and 2 tablespoons of olive oil! Mix it all up and bake in the oven on 180 degrees Celsius for 10-15 minutes or until crispy!

Roast veggies instead of fried

Fried potatoes/vegetables can add more unnecessary fats into your day! Instead of fried veggies, give roasting your veggies in the oven – maybe with the roast ham!  I love roasting potatoes, carrots, beets, onion and broccoli with a touch of salt, pepper, dried oregano and lemon!

Dark chocolate instead of Milk chocolate

Dark chocolate is amaaaazing and certainly will cure your sweet tooth! Dark chocolate contains less than half the sugar of milk chocolate, so that’s also a bonus! Dark chocolate is also quite versatile and can be added to most dessert recipes, allowing you to be healthier without even realising. Grab some dark chocolate and melt on some strawberries for a yummy Chrissy dessert!

Olive oil instead of Canola oil

Olive oil is a fantastic oil to cook with. Olive oil is full of healthy, monounsaturated fats, which help reduce cholesterol and lower risk of heart disease. Try looking out for an extra virgin olive oil for your cooking. A quick tip, olive oil once opened only has a 4-week window where the antioxidants are at their prime, so try to buy smaller bottles rather than bulk to be able to reap all the benefits from the oil.

Greek yoghurt dressings instead of creamy dressings

Instead of loading up on creamy salad dressings, this amazing Greek yogurt salad dressing is super easy and absolutely delicious! It will make you question why you ever used creamy dressings in the first place. Using around ½ cup of Greek yoghurt, squeeze ¼ lemon juice and add a pinch of salt, a pinch of black pepper and a small crushed garlic clove. Mix it all together and pour over potato salads, toss salads or even dip that Chrissy ham in it!

I hope you have the best Christmas, indulge, spend time with family and celebrate! Leah x
