Unilever Is Buying Beloved Skin-Care Brand Paula's Choice
Well, it appears that Paula really has chosen.
Skin-care brand Paula's Choice has signed an acquisition deal with Unilever, the parent company behind many of the country's most notable beauty and grooming household names including Dove, Vaseline, St. Ives, Pond's, Suave, Tresemmé, plus a slew of other brands. Unilever did not disclose any details of the deal in its announcement of the acquisition.
The deal is expected to close by the third quarter (which begins in July and ends in September), according to reporting from WWD. When it does, customers can expect the reach of Paula's Choice to expand significantly. "Developing Unilever's portfolio in the high-growth premium skin-care segment is one of our strategic priorities and I'm excited that Paula's Choice is joining us on this journey," Unilever beauty and personal-care president Sunny Jain says about the deal in a press release from Unilever.
According to that release, Paula's Choice will fall under the umbrella of Unilever Prestige, a subset of brands that also houses Kate Somerville, Dermalogica, Murad, and Tatcha, among others. The direct-to-consumer brand, known for its ingredient transparency and online ingredient glossary, was founded in 1995 by Paula Begoun. In the press release, Begoun expresses her excitement about the deal. "I am so excited that Unilever and Paula's Choice are joining forces," she says. "With Unilever, we can build on our work and vision spanning 26 years of creating brilliant products, and by giving people the self-confidence that comes from knowing they are taking the best care of their skin possible."
Allure has reached out to both Paula's Choice and Unilever for comment.
