Mat Fraser Just Pulled a Deadlift PR

CrossFit GOAT Mat Fraser isn’t living a life of repose in his retirement. While the five-time World’s Fittest Man is no longer competing in his sport, that doesn’t mean that he’s stopped training. He’s just approaching his workouts differently.

That means he’s been able to focus on different, more specific goals that he would have before during his career as the most dominant athlete in functional fitness. If Fraser wants to go all-out and max out in one discipline, he can. So that’s exactly what he recently did.

Fraser posted an update to his Instagram page celebrating a recent milestone: a new deadlift PR. He pulled an all-time best of 540 pounds. As a former Olympic lifter (where the events are clean and jerk and snatch) and CrossFitter, Fraser was likely never able to fully embrace his inner powerlifter to focus solely on producing his heaviest possible pull.

“Deadlifting wasn’t a high priority when I was training to compete and I wanted to have something to work towards that was new,” he wrote in the post’s caption. “I wrote out a couple months of training and got to work.”

Fraser spoke candidly after his retirement about the sacrifices he made during his CrossFit career so that he could perform at the absolute peak condition for competitions. “Ever since the end of the 2015 season, when I decided to stop fucking around and commit myself fully this sport, CrossFit has been my world,” Fraser wrote in a heartfelt letter at the time. “Except for a few weeks in August, when I allow myself a break, my focus has been relentless. I’ve passed up vacations, bachelor parties, and more dates with Sammy than I can count, all so I wouldn’t miss a single training session or a full night of sleep.”

Now, he can shift his training focus to deadlifts and powelifting, build out his home gym, and do whatever else catches his fancy. This probably won’t be the last PR we see from Fraser—he’s still just 31, after all—so in the meantime, happy training to the GOAT. Let’s see what else he has in store.
