Wait, How Did We All Miss Lizzo's Amazing Butterfly Afro?

If you thought her "Rumors" video with Cardi B was going to be Lizzo's only big beauty moment of the month, you clearly don't know Lizzo. It turns out, even before the clip's debut — in which she sports skinny brows, angular eye makeup, and some of her best nail art yet — she had already made a major hairstyle statement during a special event during the first week of August. She simply hadn't revealed it to all of her fans until now.

Over the weekend, Lizzo posted an adorable gif of herself on her Instagram grid that she captioned, "Sometimes I get sad… and then I —" trailing off to let the clip do the talking. In it, she briefly looks off-camera, then straight ahead to joyfully laugh. She's glowing — probably a combination of said joy along with a fantastic highlighter and her always-gorgeous skin — but what really catches the eye is her amazing Afro.

The look is reminiscent of ‘70s Afros — shorter in length but not lacking in volume or softness — and it’s given a whimsical update with a crown of four realistic-looking monarch butterfly clips. It's easily one of our favorite natural-hair looks we've seen on Lizzo, and she saved it for when she appeared in a virtual workshop for Dove's "My Hair, My CROWN" event (a reference to the CROWN Act, which aims to end hairstyle-based racial discrimination) with the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem.

As beautiful as it is, confidently wearing her natural hair hasn't always come easy to Lizzo. "When I was younger, I was definitely taught that a certain hair texture and type was considered beautiful — I did not have that hair texture, and it made me feel like I needed to hide this part of myself," she told Allure in a recent interview. "When I finally, in the last few years, started to come to terms with 'this is my hair, it's not going to change, and it's beautiful,' I felt like I finally could say that I truly loved myself."

She went on to tell Allure that she used to "lock her hair away," but that she realized she was essentially imprisoning it. So while she'll always have fun experimenting with a variety of looks, she's no longer trying to hide her natural texture. "You can't thrive when you're locked up like that. So now I'll be like, let me take this style out and let me take this wig off and let her breathe. Let her expand."
