In the Heights<\/em> Star Anthony Ramos Shares His Strong Core Workout

Anthony Ramos can act, he can sing, he can dance—but can the triple threat talent hold his own in the gym? Of course.

The 29-year-old Brooklyn native—who burst onto the scene in the Broadway production of mega-musical Hamilton and grew his star with roles in A Star Is Born, Netflix’s reboot of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, and Godzilla: King of Monsters—was an athlete first. Before he pursued acting, Ramos had a baseball career in his sights. So when he wound up stuck inside during the Covid-19 pandemic last year, Ramos knew he had to get active and be more productive with his time when he couldn’t work on-set or in the studio. “I was just looking at myself in the mirror like, dang, bro, you’re looking scrawny,” he tells the MH crew. “I was like, I should probably get back at it, it’s been years.”

Ramos enlisted trainer Corey Harbison to help him in his quest to get back into shape. The pair worked together virtually, like so many others during the pandemic period, and Ramos took to the grind performing workouts with his phone propped up against the wall to get Harbison’s instructions. When the MH crew met up with Ramos and Harbison, it was only the second time they’d trained together IRL—but you’d never know that given Ramos’ impressively chiseled physique. Clearly, the work has paid off.

The workout session is focused on the core, which is meant to give Ramos a strong foundation of strength for his work and life. Now that the world is returning to normal, that strength will be essential for Ramos in his many pursuits—this month alone, his much-anticipated movie In the Heights and his newest album, Love and Lies, are slated to drop.

“Fitness has become a big part of my life… in the line of work that I do, you’ve got to be on sets, it’s long hours, sometimes you’ve got to do stunts—you’ve got to do all kinds of physical things,” Ramos says. “Staying in shape really helps with even just getting up in the morning and feeling better.”
