Rebel Wilson Credits Her Weight Loss To The Mayr Method – But What Is That Exactly?

Let’s start by stating the obvious: Rebel Wilson looks freakin’ amazeballs at the moment (Strong! Healthy! Generally stoked on life!) and so she should be. The actress is more than mid-way through her ‘year of health’ – a challenge she set for herself in an effort to get down to her goal weight (75kgs.) To achieve this, she’s been working hard with her trainer Jono Castano and sticking to an eating plan called the Mayr Method.

Clearly, all of the above is working (did you see her do those tyre flips on Insta?) Still, we have a bunch of questions. Like…

What the eff is the Mayr Method?

The Mayr Method has actually been around for decades. It’s based on the “Mayr Cure,” which was coined by Austrian doctor Franz Xaver Mayr (who you might know as F.X. Mayr). Put simply, he believed that most people poison their digestive systems with the foods they eat and, importantly, the way they eat them.

Ever heard of Viva Mayr? It’s a boujee wellness retreat with locations around the world that’s centred around this specific approach. “Viva Mayr combines modern complementary medicine with traditional diagnostics and therapies according to F.X. Mayr,” the official Viva Mayr website says. “Once we have treated your condition, proper nutrition combined with exercise and improved mental awareness become the building blocks of your new life.”

How does the Mayr Method work?

The Mayr Method is all about eating well and bettering your gut health. According to The Guardian, it works by getting followers to stop snacking, reduce their gluten and dairy intake and chew their food for longer (40 to 60 times per bite.) Sugar and caffeine are also off-limits, with the regime focusing on whole foods that are high alkaline, like veggies and fish. Reading, talking and looking at your phone while you eat is also forbidden, as the goal is to get you to be more mindful about your meals.

How much does the Mayr Method cost?

A consultation at a Viva Mayr facility costs a couple of hundred dollars, with overnight stays setting you back way more. Obviously travel is off the table right now (boo, COVID!) so The Viva Mayr Diet book is the best option if you’re wanting to read up on the basics.

What else is Rebel doing?

When she’s not spending all her time chewing her food, Rebel manages six sweat sessions per week. Just last month she posted about how she’d been “crushing” weekend exercise and even shared footage of her running 30 laps of the Oprah House stairs.
