It’s know as the millennial meal du jour, popular amongst health–conscious hipsters.
But it turns out, the trendy snack is not as good for you as you may think.
A new study, from the Centre for Nutrition Research and the Illinois Institute of Technology, shows that while avocados work well as a replacement for processed carbs like bread and pasta, they are not as effective for weight–loss when paired WITH carbs.
Sadly, even with a nice bit of soughdough.
The research found that the savoury fruit is great at suppressing hunger and fuelling weight loss for hours.
It also had a remarkable effect controlling insulin resistance and blood glucose in 31 overweight and obese adults.
But to get the full effects, it was important to use it as a carb substitute rather than a carb accompaniment.
The findings fuel the ongoing debate about carbs vs fat.
Advocates of the popular Keto diet, believe that carbohydrates are the enemy, not fats.
But 2018 research from the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Germany found that diets very low in carbohydrates may actually increase the risk of premature death over time.
Dr Sally Norton previously spoke to the Daily Star about the fat vs carbs conundrum.
The slimming expert, who founded Vavistalife.com, said: “One food group that has been given a pretty bad rep over the past few years is carbohydrates.”
“Of course, we know that starchy, refined carbs aren’t great for us – and we do eat far too much of them, so cutting back is a definitely a good thing.”
“But cutting carbs out altogether? Carbs can help us feel full and provide us with a lot of healthy nutrients and essential fibre – we just need to make sure we are eating the right sort.”
And the right sort of carbs are also known as ‘complex carbs’ which include whole-grain pasta and bread, brown rice, and legumes
So while avocado toast may not be the route to fast weight loss, as long as you stick to healthy wholemeal bread, you shouldn’t be piling the pounds on anytime soon, either.
