Watch This Bodybuilder Try Olympic Weightlifting for the First Time

Influencer MattDoesFitness is no stranger to a barbell, but that doesn’t make him a weightlifter. In a new video on his YouTube channel, Matt takes on a weightlifting challenge with Team GB Olympian Sarah Davies, who lifted 280 pounds in the clean and jerk and placed fifth overall in her weight class at Tokyo 2020.

When asked if she thinks Matt will be able to hold his own in their weightlifting session, Sarah reminds him that as a bodybuilder and fitness model, he doesn’t necessarily have the proper skill-based foundation, and that they will need to start from scratch for his own safety. “When guys try weightlifting specifically, if they’ve already got a good gym training basis, they struggle more from an ego standpoint,” she says. “It’s so technical, you have to do the lighter weights, you can’t just slap the weight on and hope for the best.”

Sarah starts Matt off with a weightless bar, so that he can practice getting the movement patterns right for the snatch. Sarah is so impressed by Matt’s form here that they then start adding plates, and after a couple of missteps, he is able to work his way up to a max single rep of 187 pounds—albeit with less-than-perfect technique.

Next, Sarah coaches Matt through the second of the two events she competed in at Tokyo; the clean and jerk. Matt excels in the first few rounds, and adds more and more weight until he is attempting 250 pounds—but he admits that he is getting incredibly fatigued by now. “It’s getting to the point where I’m scared about having that much weight above my head,” he says. Ultimately, he is unable to achieve that max, and so his PB at the end of the session for the clean and jerk is 242 pounds.
