UFC Fighter Chris Weidman Is Back in the Gym After a Brutal Leg Injury
After a devastating leg injury back in April, UFC fighter Chris Weidman is back in the gym. The 36-year-old shared a video of himself doing drills and “kinda” sparring in a recent Instagram post. He also posted pictures from that week’s doctor’s appointment. Although he’s seven weeks post-surgery and he still has some healing to do for a full recovery, it appears he’s powering through the pain.
Weidman suffered an open fracture of the tibia and fibula in the right leg during his fight against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 on April 24. In the wake of the injury, Weidman received support from celebrities including Vin Diesel and fellow UFC fighter Anderson Silva.
Back in May, Weidman uploaded a YouTube video explaining his surgery and hospital stay. He explained his plans to retire, and how the injury interrupted how he wanted to finish his career. Although he said in the video that it would take 6 to 12 months before he could train, Weidman looks like he’s already feeling a little better.
In his post, Weidman has a short video giving out some light jabs in the gym. Then there are two videos and two pictures in his doctor’s office, showing a recent x-ray of his healing process. “I woke up yesterday with no plans on getting back in the gym. I just started driving again and was feeling good, so I said to my self I’m going to drive to the gym and try to hit the bag,” Weidman says in his caption. “I figured I would probably last a minute and then have to rest and elevate my leg, but I think the excitement carried me through. Once I got there and saw some of my guys, I couldn’t resist asking to do some drills and then eventually “spar” kinda. Felt soooooo good to be back.”
The UFC fighter promised to post a full video on YouTube later going into more detail about how he’s been doing. He’s been using the platform to keep fans updated on his physical therapy and dips back into working out. Weidman is determined to finish his fighting career the way he intended, leg injury be damned.
“It boggles my mind that I could do what I did in the gym with my leg looking like that 😆,” Weidman also says in the post. “Everything is mental!!”
